Getting called into the boss’s office can only be for two reasons. To inform you of ways you need to improve or a raise. When it’s to receive some criticism, you need to be prepared. Know how you want to handle this situation before it occurs.

Listen Carefully

No one wants to hear that they are not performing. Push aside the feeling of anger and sadness and listen carefully. Most times, it’s not as harsh as you feel. They are giving criticism to show you areas you could work on. Listening to the examples will help you see the specific things you need to change.

Take Accountability

It’s easy to go straight into a defensive mood when a supervisor begins to criticize our work. Yelling is never the right choice. We want to show all the ways that we are excelling and how they are wrong. The best way to move ahead in this situation is to take accountability first. Admit to the things you failed at and follow up with a plan to improve.
