To move forward and upward in your career, you are going to have to take risks. Promotions are not handed out. You have to reach out and take them. Becoming stagnant is not going to get you anywhere. Get out of your comfort zone and start taking risks.
Reach Out
The risks don’t have to start huge. Talk to your supervisor and ask. See if there are more responsibilities that you can take on. Maybe a particular project. Even if there isn’t anything at the moment, you will be showing them that you are ready for more. When an assignment comes up, your name will be at the top of their list.
Pick Up the Slack
If you see a need fill it. It will not go unnoticed. Taking the initiative to do work, others have forgotten or haven’t thought of will go a long way. Try not to step on anyone’s toes, but look for tasks. The higher-ups will see you as someone that they can rely on. Reliability and motivation are traits all employers are looking for.
Keep Trying
Don’t stop trying. It may take some time to get that big promotion or pay raise. Taking one risk isn’t enough. If you want to advance your career, you have to work for it continually. Don’t get down if you don’t get recognition from the beginning. Take risk after risk until you achieve it. All your hard work will pay off!
